Wilson, 31,??has bought seven lottery?tickets. Other than passing out, she's got big plans if one ends up being a winner: She'd invest in real estate, but first, she would make sure her friends and family were taken care of.

"I would donate to St. Jude's for cancer research, for breast cancer, do stuff like that. Because come on, why not? Don't be stingy. God didn't bless you with it for no reason. Help people out. Kirkcaldie & Stains rejects offer for unprofitable retail business ...

Kirkcaldie & Stains has ended discussions with a potential buyer of its unprofitable retail business, saying the parties have ?substantially different? views on the unit?s value.

The Wellington-based company said it won?t hold any further discussions with J C Capital, which was arranging an offer to buy the retailer?s flagship department store. The offer emerged last year.

?At this stage the board has a substantially different view on the value of the retail business from that of J C Capital,? chairman Falcon Clouston said in a statement. ?The board is not proposing any further discussions at this stage.?

The retail unit has been unprofitable for the past two years, and made a loss of $465,000 in the 12 months ended Aug. 31. The group posted a loss of $56,000 in the year as the property unit offset those losses.

As well as its flagship store on Lambton Quay, Kirkcaldie?s owns the Harbour City Centre, a historic six-floor retail and office building next door, which is currently being earthquake strengthened.

The shares last traded at $2.75 apiece, valuing the company at $28.2 million.

Getting kids interested in math careers may require a hero.

Back when I was a high school math geek, our math team would go to meets that occasionally had tables set up to encourage us to pursue various careers that would make use of our mad math skillz. The one such profession where the level of encouragement far outstripped our teenaged interest was the actuarial field. Indeed, more than the objective boringness of the field (to the extent that we had enough information to evaluate that) it may have been the vehement protests of how not-boring actuarial work and actuaries are (really!) that persuaded us that actuarial work was probably pretty boring.

Recently, I think I have hit upon something that might help actuaries turn this perception around. They need a superhero.

Seriously, if any comic book superhero of note had been an actuary as his cover job, actuarial work would have gotten an automatic boost in the estimation of teen geeks. Journalism? Cool, because that was Superman?s day job. Millionaire-industrialist-playboy-philanthropist? Definitely an acceptable career path, since that was Batman?s day job. Librarian? Cool not just because of the access to all those books and periodicals, but also because it was Batgirl?s day job. High school student? Not cool, exactly, but more tolerable on account of being Spiderman?s day job.

Having a superhero who alternated nights of crime-fighting with days assessing risk would raise the esteem of actuarial science among high school mathletes.

There are details that would need to be worked out, of course.

The name for this superhero? Let?s pencil in The Numerator. (?He always comes out on top!?)

His origin story? Probably it would involve looking up from his calculations and crying, ?Egad! Crime does pay!? After which, of course, he would dedicate himself to fighting that crime (else we?re looking at the origin story of a supervillain).*

My guess is that The Numerator is going to be one of those superheros that relies on cool gadgets and knowledge rather than on actual superhuman strength or powers ? more like Batman than Spiderman. (Otherwise, we?re looking at him getting his fingers caught in a radioactive adding machine, thereby ending up with the power to shoot calculator tape from his fingers, which ? I don?t think so.) His utility belt probably includes actuarial tables and a slide-rule. But maybe he?s also a synesthete who can look at the numbers and smell evil.

His nemeses? Undoubtedly they will be legion ? corporate crooks, purveyors of Ponzi schemes ? but one of them might be Pay-Day Shark. This supervillain, tricked out in a sharkskin suit, will be happy to give you an advance on your paycheck as long as you?re ready to pay interest and fees that end up being about 400% of the amount you?re borrowing. When you can?t pay, he?ll threaten you will his tank of hungry and ill-tempered (but not laser-sight-equipped) sharks. He may even let his pretties eat one of your limbs. But Pay-Day Shark wants to help you ? he?ll loan you a prosthetic limb, for a reasonable fee.

Who can save you from his clutches? The Numerator!

DC Comics? Marvel Comics? American Academy of Actuaries? I think we have something here. Let?s talk.

I have been role playing for along time but due to a lack of role players in my life I have become rather rusty, I have played many variants of role play (pencil and paper) and play Kingdoms games.

I have always liked SF when it comes to Role play due to the vast options it offers (a fantasy RP can offer just as many or even more options but SF gives the feeling of much greater freedom)

I especially am interested in Role play on the lines of the classic doctor who series (jon pertwee and tom baker) but I am yet to truly attempt such a role play.

I am open minded and that?s all that really matters I believe.

In a short but very important board meeting - trustees made it official - approving the resignation of Michael Hogan, who was president of the state's flagship university for only about 20 months.? His presidency officially ends on July 1st.?

After a one-year paid sabbatical he will return as distinguished professor of history making just over $285,000 a year. ?

Christopher Kennedy, Chairman, O of I Board of Trustees said ?That was instigated by president Hogan, his resignation was offered directly to me. I think he's happy that's done now and looking forward to his future"

Board chairman Christopher Kennedy says today is a good day for the university, because the board also approved the appointment of the new president:? 64-year-old Robert Easter, a veteran professor and administrator.? Kennedy says there are many reasons why Easter is the right choice.?

"Bob Easter has been to china 40 times.-- very thoughtful about the university in its global setting, he's got a perspective that's broader than just about anybody else's," Kennedy said.

Today Kennedy didn't discuss Michael Hogan?s tumultuous presidency, but says the university is looking for much more than just smooth sailing going forward.?

"Calm waters is not what we're looking for, I think we recognize that change was necessary--but it's a place of new ideas and we never want to trade that in for an easy day," he said.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Actor Russell Brand turned himself in Thursday afternoon to New Orleans police after an arrest warrant was issued for him on a charge of simple criminal damage to property valued at $700, authorities said.

Brand posted bond and was released from jail Thursday afternoon, said police spokesman Frank Robertson. Bond had been set at $5,000, he said.

Police issued the warrant earlier Thursday for Brand, who is in New Orleans to film an untitled movie.

Police spokeswoman Remi Braden on Thursday could not immediately release details of what happened Monday. Celebrity website TMZ said the charges stem from a confrontation with a photographer who was trying to take Brand's photo from a car.

In a Twitter posting on Wednesday, Brand wrote, "Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iphone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory."

Neither Brand nor his publicist could immediately be reached for comment.

Brand's film credits include "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "Get Him to the Greek." A judge recently granted him a divorce from singer Katy Perry.

Mandate Pictures, which is producing the untitled comedy in New Orleans, said it is being directed by "Young Adult" and "Juno" writer Diablo Cody.

The film also stars two-time "Dancing With the Stars" champ Julianne Hough, Octavia Spencer, who recently won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in the movie "The Help," as well as Nick Offerman and Holly Hunter.

MUNSTER: Apple Will Sell More Than 1 Million ... - Business Insider

Apple analyst Gene Munster is out with a note predicting 1 million in iPad sales on Friday, the launch day for the new iPad.

Assuming an average sales price of $650, that would be $650 million in sales that day from that product alone.

Here's how Munster gets there:

• Recap of Past iPad Launches. Apple sold 300k iPads on launch day when the original iPad was first released (4/3/10). With the iPad 2, supply was very constrained, the company did not allow pre-orders and stores sold out quickly on launch day (3/11/11). Specifically, iPad 2 was announced on 3/2/11, online preorders began at 1am PT the same day the product launched in stores (3/11/11) and within several hours the shipment lead-times rose from 3-5 days to 2-3 weeks. Unfortunately, the company did not give a launch day sales figure, likely due to severe supply constraints artificially suppressing the number.

• iPhone 4 Figures Show Similar Launch In Device Life-Cycle. Since the launch of the first iPad, Apple has sold just over 55m iPads to date. And Apple launched the iPhone 4 in 5 countries after having sold over 50m iPhones through the Mar-10 quarter. The company took 600k pre-orders in one day (6/15/10) before systems were overloaded and pre-orders were halted. Then on 6/24 retail sales began and by 6/26 (with 3 days of sales) the company had sold 1.7m iPhone 4 units. Given the new iPad will be sold in 12 countries on 3/16, we are confident the company will sell over 1m on launch day.

Munster has had some trouble estimating iPad launch day sales in the past. When the first iPad came out he predicted 600,000-700,000 sold. Turns out it was 300,000. For the iPad 2 he predicted 500,000 on opening day, but Apple didn't release a number.

Dartmouth student's claims put hazing in spotlight

HANOVER, N.H. (AP) ? Things have only gotten messier at Dartmouth College in the weeks since a former fraternity brother went public with hazing allegations involving swimming in and swallowing vomit.

Senior Andrew Lohse brought the issue to the forefront in January, when he wrote a column in the school newspaper describing "dehumanizing" experiences he witnessed at Sigma Alpha Epsilon. According to Lohse, the fraternity pressured pledges to swim in a kiddie pool of rotten food, vomit and other bodily fluids; eat omelets made of vomit and chug cups of vinegar. He called those activities the norm rather than the exception on the Ivy League campus, and he criticized the administration for not doing enough when he made anonymous complaints last year.

The week after the column was published, more than 100 faculty members wrote to the administration, describing hazing an "open secret" and calling on the administration to set up an independent commission to address it. The college has since formed a task force and brought hazing charges through its judicial affairs office against the fraternity and more than a quarter of its members, including Lohse.

Dean of the College Charlotte Johnson declined to comment on those charges, but the fraternity's president, Brendan Mahoney, said all 27 accused students face identical charges relating to new member recruitment in the fall of 2011. But by that time, the fraternity had gotten rid of any traditions that would be "deemed problematic" by the administration, Mahoney said, and no current members of SAE were members in 2009 when Lohse was a pledge.

As for Lohse's graphic allegations, "None of these practices, and nothing remotely close to hazing, occurred at our pledge events in 2011," he said in an email to The Associated Press.

Dartblog.com, a blog written by former students about the college, obtained a copy of the letter notifying Lohse of the charges against him. According to the letter, Lohse is accused of threatening physical harm to new fraternity members, putting other students in fear for their safety and/or engaging in hazing during the fall 2011 term. He also is accused providing alcohol to underage students, providing drugs and/or providing alcohol to obviously intoxicated individuals during the same time period.

The charges filed were identical for the other individuals, "even though Lohse's tale does not describe them as engaged in the same activities," said Mahoney, who said students have been charged "without a shred of real evidence." Administrators, he suggested, are panicking in the face of bad press.

"We do know that Dartmouth has come in for a lot of bad publicity because of Lohse's allegations. We hope Dartmouth's administration will focus on the evidence rather than on a public relations strategy," he said.

Lohse declined to comment Monday, citing an agreement with another publication. Johnson, the college administrator, strongly denied both Lohse's allegation that the college failed to act on his initial complaints and Mahoney's suggestion that the recent charges were brought to quell criticism.

"When we get detailed, specific information regarding hazing or any other violation of our code, we act," she said. "This isn't a witch hunt, nor are we sitting on our hands."

She said the administration already had been working hard to tackle the issue of hazing and was not simply responding to the recent allegations and faculty pressure.

For example, the college hired a new director of Greek organizations who had been credited with turning around the fraternity and sorority system at another college, has hired two sexual assault coordinators and is in the process of hiring another alcohol and drug abuse counselor. The college sees hazing as part of a larger problem, tied together with binge drinking and sexual assault, and has taken steps to address all three through the National College Health Improvement Project it launched last year.

"Clearly we put our resources where our mouth is," she said. "This idea that we have somehow thrown up our hands, said there's nothing we can do about hazing or other high risk behavior going on on college campuses is a complete mischaracterization."

Johnson also said college officials did everything they could when Lohse made his anonymous complaints, but the tips he provided didn't pan out.

Hanover Police Chief Nicholas Giaccone, who also investigated at the time, agreed. Based on information Lohse provided, police set up a stakeout in a wooded area in December 2010 but nothing they witnessed among pledges and SAE members amounted to hazing, he said. Police began investigating again after Lohse's column was published, but criminal charges are unlikely, Giaccone said, in large part because Lohse is not cooperating with police.

"We also realized that based on his past history with us, that he may be a witness that would have credibility issues, and it may hard to rehabilitate him in the eyes of judge or jury if we ended up going that route," Giaccone said.

Those credibility issues include Lohse's 2010 arrest and conviction for cocaine possession and witness tampering and a 2011 disorderly conduct conviction, following a confrontation with a security officer during Homecoming Weekend festivities.

"The opinion of most students is that he has a bone to pick with both the college and SAE," said Stephanie Pignatiello, a senior who said that while she believes hazing happens, she thinks Lohse's claims are greatly exaggerated. But she also agrees with him that the college hasn't done much to solve the problem.

"They seem to be largely absent," she said. "I don't think much will change at the administrative level."

Sophomore Stuart Ghafoor said reading Lohse's condensed description of hazing was "gross," but not a surprise. He thinks SAE is being scapegoated so the college can appear to be doing something to address hazing.

"But if the administration goes after it, it could make it even more underground, which would be more dangerous," he said.
